The Royal Oak Story

The Pendrill Family

Boscobel House

HMS Royal Oak

History

English Oak is the national tree of England. It sometimes appears on items such as our stamps and coins.

English Oak represents strength and endurance. It is a protector of our way of life.

A number of our Royal Navy ships have been named HMS Royal Oak.

We also have Royal Oak as one of our most popular pub names.

The name Royal Oak remembers the story of how, with the help of the Pendrill family at Boscobel House, Charles II hid in an oak tree.

350 years ago, 29th May was designated Royal Oak Day by Act of Parliament. It commemorates the return of Charles II and restoration of England’s Monarchy.
