Pottery
Thomas Toft was an English potter who worked in the Staffordshire Potteries during the time of Charles II's Restoration. He made numerous large dishes painted with the Royal Oak (see above). When painting, he used a coloured clay and water mixture of cream-like consistency called slip. Sometimes he trailed a red slip onto a lighter background, sometimes vice-versa. Black and green slips were also used. According to the common practice of the time, Thomas glazed these Royal Oak dishes with a galena lead oxide glaze, giving them a characteristic yellow tinge. ____________________ Royal Worcester, is a manufacturer of Bone China. It was esablished in 1751, and continues to produce pottery painted with the Royal Oak.
