Horatio Nelson (1758 - 1805) drew up a special petition advising the need to replant England's forests with Oak, and Admiral Collingwood, a great friend of Nelson, always carried a pocket full of acorns which he would carefully plant wherever he went. English Oak currently faces a disease called Acute Oak Decline (AOD), so although we don't need oak for building war ships, the case for planting English Oak is today as strong as ever. Planting an oak tree on Royal Oak Day keeps the memory of Charles II's escape alive! |
