Monarch's Way

Monarch's Way

Following his defeat at the battle of Worcester, Charles travelled first north, then south through the Cotswolds. He then went from the Mendips to the South Coast. Finally, from the South Downs he reached Shoreham where he made his escape to France.

This exciting adventure took six weeks. On the way he was supported by many at great risk to their own lives. He was given shelter in places both great and humble, many of which still exist today. Today, the route Charles took is a popular long distance walk. The way is sign posted throughout its historic 615 mile length with the Monarch's Way logo:

The logo represents the Royal Oak tree at Boscobel and the ship on which Charles eventually escaped to France.

Using footpaths and bridleways the way closely follows the route taken by Charles and enables visits to many historic sites and buildings.

The Monarch’s Way also goes through two World Heritage Sites and six Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty plus some of the finest scenery in western and southern England!
