Give us Back Our Holiday!

Write to your MP and let them know:

  • Royal Oak Day is part of our National Heritage
  • It's removal as a public holiday in 1859 was in violation of the Act of Uniformity and had no support from the Church or People*
  • We demand our public holiday back!

*The Service for the 29th of May (the Restoration of King Charles II) was removed from the Prayer Book on January 17, 1859 by royal warrant of Queen Victoria, acting in response to a petition from Parliament; however, this suppression of our Royal Oak Public Holiday, was accomplished without the consent of Convocation - it was therefore in direct violation of the compact between Church and Realm, as set forth in the Act of Uniformity which imposed the Book of Common Prayer in 1662.

It's our celebration, but our Royal Oak public holiday was removed without concent from the church or people - It's time we got our holiday back!

In 2010, 'Clover Taverns' Managing Director, Andy Wilkinson got the ball rolling with this campaign by sending an official request to Nick Clegg inviting him to "consider re-instating the 29 May as a public holiday".  Said Andy:  “When the holiday was abolished in 1859 the party in power was the very first Liberal government. Now the Liberals are once again in a place of power, Clover Taverns is backing a campaign to ask the Deputy Prime Minister Clegg to put right some wrong decisions made by his Liberal predecessors".
